Teaching Philosophy

Fostering lifelong musicians

My main goal is fostering lifelong musicians through my teaching and collaborative work. With most of my piano teaching based on the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) syllabus, I can cater to my student’s goals in creating a repertoire list to work on. Depending on the interests of working toward an exam or playing for personal fulfillment, students will be introduced to exploring a variety of pieces. Students are encouraged to practice consistently to see improvement from week-to-week so that lessons are productive in creating musical choices and personality through their playing.

A student-centered approach

Especially with beginners, I try to interconnect basic music theory with their piano playing to broaden their skills for broader contexts. I prioritize a student-centered approach; my students deserve to feel comfortable and valued in their potential through our musical journey together. Overall, I like to design and set short-term goals for students to have after every lesson in hopes that they stretch to long-term goals as students grow. Being a musician is a lifelong process, and I truly feel that my students are learning through me as much as I am learning to become a better teacher for them.

Routine, community, and performing

Having a consistent routine of weekly piano lessons help with ongoing success and self-discipline. Our piano studio also finds opportunities to pour into the community through performances and initiatives at least once per year. Students are often encouraged to perform for one another and close friends/family so that they learn both piano technique and performance skills.
